Intro

Hey I'm Apple and I have no idea how to create this page with fancy links and stuff(studying as I'm writing this) but I wanted to make an EM guide for newbies with no or little idea on what to do & how to become an EM. I don't consider myself a good/pro player but I felt the difficulties too when I first played RO(it's not an easy game, you gotta admit) and also different servers have different features so... I dunno if I'm making any sense. Just keep in mind that anything I write here is NOT the only answer and you may always find a better way to acheive the goal. If the case please share to make things better :)

In short, TLDR : THIS GUIDE IS MAINLY FOR COMPLETE NEWBIES so there may be too much basic information for those who are used to the game. TY for understanding and forgive me for any troubles while reading this.

Beginning - Novice & Magician & Sage & High Magician

The beginning part is simple. You log on -> accept to follow the guide -> follow the npc until the main office part is over -> go to Eden Group and talk to Lime to join the group -> get Eden equips -> go to Poring Village instance* -> By the time you finish the instance you will be lvl 91ish and in between there will be an npc that lets you change the class to Sage.

  • In case you are not level 10 yet when you arrive at the Eden group, just click on warper->dungeon->Payon dungeon for 1 zombie. One zombie should be enough. Type '@go eden' to teleport to eden ; or you could use the item 'Eden group Mark' as well.

Use colt bolts on Drops and fire bolt or fire ball to Porings and Poporings. Depending on INT, using low level skills will be enough.

Once you get out of the Poring instance make sure to enchant the Carrot or Leek. Regarding enchanting refer to this page : Poring Village. It's not the best gear but every little bit helps at the beginning.

Next go to Eden and check the boards. Each boards has corresponding required level range so you want to check the 70~99 one for now. In case you are not playing the game right now and would like to know which quests are available : Kill Quests and Item Collection Boards

From the 70~99 quests, I prefer Glast Heim 'Wraith and Evil Druids'. Others... either you gotta walk too much or the monsters hurt too much. Wraith/Evil druids are annoying too when they curse you and stuff but you can directly teleport from Eden so it's really convenient to go back and forth. Repeat this quest couple of times until you become level 99.

Two times will probably be enough. In case you become 99 before finishing the second round, I recommend finishing it up and DO NOT turn it in for rewards yet.

*Check Tips#7 for an option to buy an infinite fly wing to teleport to different maps faster+more conveniently.

Once you are level 99, go to Main office to rebirth.

If you are freshly new to the game, I suggest going to the Payon Dungeon to kill some zombies. They are squishy so you don't need any gears to knock them down. 1 zombie should be enough from Job level 1 to 10. Once you are job level 10 High Novice, go to Main office to become a High Magician. Sad part is your Base level is probably around 3to5 so you will need to go back to Payon Dungeon to level up some more. I suggest lvling up to at least 10 here to equip the eden gears. It's also a good idea to lvl up here bit more with the eden board quest(payon dungeon quest is for lvl15+). All the eden coins you get by completing these quests will be used well so the more you complete these quests, the easier life you will find later.

After one run of Payon dungeon quest you should be lvl 45~50ish. from there explore other Eden quests or turn in the 'Wraith' quest that we saved from earlier. it should get you job lvl 50 easily; now you are a professor.

Beginning 2 - Professor

Now that you are a Professor, you have two options : to keep on casting magics or beat up enimies with a hard cased book until you become a sorcerer. :P

Personally I prefer the latter : I think it's more fun. New stuff keepes me interested lol

If you choose to keep on casting magic, then use any spells you like(keep in mind the elements though! use your advantage!).

If you choose to try new method then you will be using the skill 'Auto Spell'. Read the skill's description and use it to lvl up.

*once you reach lvl 45 you can get a new Eden weapon. I write this at this stage because this is the perfect timing to get one. Get the Spellbook if you are going to 'auto spell' and Magicbook if you are going to 'cast' spells. You can get another one if you make a mistake so don't worry if you get a wrong one.

*This stage is really short since you lvl up fast; so feel free to do whatver you want.

Except for some new skills it's all the same - you lvl up while completing some eden quests.

Personally I'm lazy so I just repeat 'Wraith' quests :P

Mid - Sorcerer(Basics)

Grats, you are a sorcerer. Now you get to use some nice new magics and you can also summon spirit/elementals no other class can(that's if you have the required items).

First of all we gotta understand 'Fixed Cast Time' and 'Variable Cast Time'. Please take some time to read this page : Stats when you have the time. RO has some complicated stuff so gotta study if you aren't familiar with these mechanics.

Simply put there are two types of Casting time and you need to deal with BOTH of them to be able to spam spells.

The main skills we will be using at this 'sorcerer' stage are : Psychic Wave and Diamond Dust.

- Psychic Wave

lvl5 Psychic Wave has 0.6s Fixed Cast Time(FCT) and 12s Variable Cast Time(VCT).

For FCT we can reduce it with

Advanced Paradise Shoes (470093) which gives 0.3 seconds reduction

+

Advanced Paradise Magic Ring (490128) which gives 0.2 seconds reduction.

But 0.1 second is still left and you will need items like an Illusion Leg Type B [1] (22197) with an enchant(Modification Module (Fixed Casting Time) (25694)) for the remaining FCT.

- Diamond Dust

lvl5 Diamond Dust has 0s FCT and 7s VCT. Lower lvl skill has longer cast time so make sure you master this skill.

There's no fixed cast time and 7s of variable cast time is much shorter than psychic wave but as a newbie with no gears, it won't be possible to completely remove the casting time.

There's no other choice ; at this stage we will have to live with this.

Spending some more skill points on Free Cast will help since it lets you move around and kite while casting stuff.

SKill Rotation + Strategy

- Both skills above have cool down of 5s so use a skill while the other one is under cooldown. Psychic has larger AOE so better to use it when there's a larger group of mobs.

- Also, they both need to be targeted on the ground so you will have to get used to kiting + luring mobs to desired location.

- Since we focus all of early points to INT and DEX you will be squishy; so take a deep breath and take it easy.

May take some deaths to get used to Sorcerer.

Mid - Sorcerer(Lvling)

Now that you kinda got to know about the skills, you should get some equips now.

Get 15 Old picks from Pitman at Einbech dungeons -> for Paradise Sorcerer Magic Book.

and

Get 5 Blue Hair from Kobolds(@navi rafild05 or go to Ice dungeon->exit-> go below-> go right)

and

15 Elastic bands from Wootan Shooters(Beach Dungeon 3 -> exit to the right -> go up)

and

Rent Eden Advanced Shadows using 20 Eden coins.

Now All Set!

Either lvl up at Magma Dungeon F2 for some Eden quests + money

or

go to Illusion Moonlight. There are repeatable quests for illusion dungeons so read the corresponding wiki page : Illusion Dungeons.

*Also read Tip#4the

Once you reach lvl 120+ you can go to Illusion of Vampire as well. Or you can just spam Moonlight + Magma dungeon until 130+

From here I'd do some Episode Quests*

16.1 Banquest of Heroes - If you are new it's worth it to take a short break from repeating the same stuff(eden quests, etc).

some quests are required for 17.1 Episode so read the wiki page.

16.2 Terra Gloria - Not required

17.1 Illusion - This has to be completed. By completing this Episode you gain access to Illusion set and Grace Set.

These equips are fairly easy to get and you can use these until 200. For these Gears refer to : Gears

17.2 Sage Legacy - Not a must but it's a good idea to get this episode done as well. You gain access to Automatic Equipments which are really good but they are really expensive to get. Not recommeneded for first character + newbies.

*While doing Episodes quests(even while grinding as well) you may find some enemies or bosses too difficult. Read Tip#1 and try the buffs. They are just AMAZING.

After episodes you should be way over 150, maybe even close to 180.

From here personally I like to grind at illusions for some zeny + slow lvling.

Illusion Teddy Bear & Illusion Luanda are my favourites at this stage.

Or you could also do some Eden Board quests too.

Read Tip #5 for Elementals

End? or another beginning :P

Once you become an EM, it's pretty simple.

Conflagration / Venom Swamp / Lightning Land / Terra Drive are your buddies.

+

Summon elementals to boost dmg if needed.

- I usually use Serpens* because Poison property dmg is boosted on Water, Fire, Earth, and Wind enemies. Except against Holy/Undead/Shadow/Ghost, Poison property atks are pretty versatile.

*Because Great Natures are so cheap, summoning Serpens after Tera is preferable.

- Fire element atks are boosted against Undead enemies so Conflagration I think is the best skill among Conflagration / Lightning Land / Terra Drive.

- Fire atks are then weaker against Water enemies = therefore lightning land is useful too

- As a result Venom Swamp + Conflagration + Lightning Land = ALL DEAD xD

Now you should

Stats

Stats(click this to learn about each stats. Highly recommended for fresh newbies)

Before Rebirth(Novice + Magician + Sage) : not really important so except for Int you can improvise as well.

Str 1
Agi 1
Vit 1
Int 99 Top priority. This is your damage.
Dex 99
Luk 1

After Rebirth, Professor : This is just a suggestion and you can always reset the stats at the main office so feel free to improvise.

Str 1
Agi 99 Evasion + atk speed
Vit 1 We will rely on Agi to evade, rather than to take hits
Int 99 Our atks are still 'Magic' so need this
Dex 1 We don't need to 'hit' or 'cast' so don't need dex for now
Luk 1

Sorcerer -> Elemental Master

Lvl 100ish

Str 1
Agi 1
Vit 1
Int 60~70 from here you put all the future points until 120
Dex 120 Our magics have long long casting time
Luk 1

Aim for Below Stats

Recommended to put some Vit first for survivality and Agi/Luk later.

Str Rest Least importance but extra weight helps too
Agi 70 For minimal evasion
Vit 100 For minimal tankiness + Status effect resistance
Int 120~130 Duh
Dex 120 Cast speed + to help with instant cast
Luk 90 For some immunity for Curse + Extra Matk

Skills

Before Rebirth : Not important. Freely try any skills.

After Rebirth : Still not important but if you choose to use autospell then you need to master all the bolt skills

Energy Coat will be your best friend until the end of world. ALWAYS use it.

Professor

-Before Sorcerer

10 Auto spell -> 10 Advanced Book -> free.

Dragonology gives 3 free int so it's useful. Rest skills are rarely used at this stage.

-After Sorcerer

You are not going to use the auto spell anymore and don't need all 5 skill points for the elemental endowing skills either(flame launcher, etc) so feel free to get other skills if you feel like.

Recommended skills are : Advanced Book, Wall of Fog, Land Protector, Volcano, Violent Gale, Deluge, Indulge.

Please ignore the remaining 16 skill points, I accidently lvled up some more :/

Sorcerer

Gears

Magician ~ Sage : Eden Gear + Paradise Staff

Professor : Eden Gear + Paradise Sage Spellbook or Magic Book

Sorcerer

Starting Gear
Equip. Name Notes
Upper Advanced Paradise Hat
Mid None
Lower Poring Village Carrot Any Enchant is god for now(except for Absorb ones...they are for melee classes)
Weapon Paradise Sorcerer Magic Book Cheap, Easy to Get
Shield None
Armor Advanced Paradise Robe
Garment Advanced Paradise Manteau
Shoes Advanced Paradise Shoes
Acc 1(Left) Advanced Paradise Magic Ring Prevents Cast Interruption : Must have since insta-cast is not possible at this stage
Acc 2(Right) Advanced Paradise Necklace
Shadows Advanced Paradise Shadows Rent with 20 Eden coins. Until later later you will have to use these almost forever
Mid #1 Grace Set - After completing Episode 17.1 : BASE LEVEL 150
Equip. Name Notes
Upper Advanced Paradise Hat
Mid None
Lower Poring Village Carrot Any Enchant is god for now(except for Absorb ones...they are for melee classes)
Weapon Paradise Sorcerer Magic Book Cheap, Easy to Get
Shield None
Armor Grace Psychic Robe
Garment Grace Magic Manteau
Shoes Grace Magic Boots
Acc 1(Left) Advanced Paradise Magic Ring Prevents Cast Interruption : Must have since insta-cast is not possible at this stage
Acc 2(Right) Grace Magic Ring
Shadows Advanced Paradise Shadows Rent with 20 Eden coins. Until later later you will have to use these almost forever

There are 4 Grace items in the set - Armor, Garment, Shoes, and Ring. You need 80 Unknown Parts for the equips + 60 Cor Cores for 3 Grace Refine Tickets. Completing Episode 17.1 should get you enough materials ; but if you get these(or plan to get these) then you won't have enough materials for the Illusion set. I don't think it's not worth the time to grind for the mats at this stage so should choose one.

  • If you plan to grind for mats then you should go to Rudus 2F. You will probably get more cor cores than unknown parts - just trade them at Cor(town). 15 to 1 is a BAD deal but no choice lol
+9 Grace Set Bonuses W/O enchant
FCT 0.5s
VCT 50%
ACD 5%
ASPD 7%
MATK 120 5%
Neutral Element DMG 10%
Every Element DMG 30%
Psychic Wave DMG 30%
Flee 20

One Bad(or good?) thing about Grace Set - Enchants are not so great. Which means no additional expenses.

Mid #2 Illusion Set - After completing Episode 17.1* : BASE LEVEL 130
Equip. Name Notes
Upper Advanced Paradise Hat
Mid None
Lower Poring Village Carrot Any Enchant is god for now(except for Absorb ones...they are for melee classes)
Weapon Paradise Sorcerer Magic Book
Shield None
Armor Illusion Amor Type B Modification Module (Magic Power) x 2 if possible
Garment Illusion Engine Wing Type B Modification Module (Caster) x 2 if possible
Shoes Illusion Leg Type B Modification Module (Fixed Casting Time) * + Modification Module (Vital) x 2 if possible
Acc 1(Left) Advanced Paradise Magic Ring Prevents Cast Interruption : Must have since insta-cast is not possible at this stage
Acc 2(Right) Illusion Battle Chip R Modification Module (Spell) + Modification Module (Magic Healing)*
Shadows Advanced Paradise Shadows Rent with 20 Eden coins. Until later later you will have to use these almost forever

Left Accesory slot is kinda fixed so you only need 4 Illusion equips - Armor, Garment, Shoes, and Accessory(Right). You need 200 Cor Cores for the equips.

*For shoes, Fixed casting time module is a MUST. if you can't get this module, then better to use the Grace Set instead.

*Except for the FCT module no other modules are a must - but if you don't get them enchants, no point getting an illusion set. Enchants are EVERYTHING.

*Magic Healing Module is really helpful - Sorcerers have 1 STR therefore low weight limit = less stuff we can carry. We don't carry around lots of potions so leeching HP helps survivality. Even more since Psychic Wave is a multi-hitting skill : more you hit, more chance to leech.

*I wrote 'after 17.1' but technically you need to start 17.2 a bit to fully utilize the illusion set since the Illusion Reinforcement Cubethat lets you refine the gears to +9 is sold at the Varmundt mansion Cafeteria. You need 3 Cubes = 15M zeny :/ Illusion set costs a lot of money ; hence I put it #2 even with a lower lvl requirement.

*+9 Illusion gears can be exchanged with Automatic Gears later - but getting full set of Automatic gears is even more expensive so stay at Illusion unless you can afford at least 90M + thousands of Varmeal Tickets.

+9 Illusion Set Bonuses W/O enchants
VCT 15%
After Attack Delay 10%
Matk 150 10%
Ranged Atk 5%
Every Element DMG 15%
HP 1,100
SP 220 5%

Compared to Grace Set, Illusion set may seem... TRASH lol

However, Illuson set works wonders WITH enchants. Bad thing about this is that enchants cost mats(time & effort).

A LOT of mats if you are unlucky = enchant modules are random and some are rarer than the other.

1 random enchant costs 30 unknown parts and 5 cor cores so A LOT of unknown parts are needed. Check : Illusion Armors (17.1).

If you create a set you could share it with any alts(non melee obviously) later though - so choose whichever suits your situation & play style.

+9 Illusion Set Bonuses WITH enchants(may vary depending on the actual enchants you apply)
FCT 0.7s
VCT 47%
After Atk Delay 10%
Matk 268 20%
Ranged Atk 5%
Every Element DMG 15%
HP 3,600 10%
SP 220 5%
Mid #3 Comparing Grace Set(NO enchants) & Illusion Set(with almost MAX Enchants)
Grace Illusion Notes
FCT 0.5s 0.7s 0.7s is PERFECT because 0.6s is needed for Psychic and Diamond Dust
VCT 50% 47% more VCT is obviously better but 3% diff. is... almost nothing
ACD 5% 0% Not important
ASPD 7% 0% Not important
After Atk Delay 0 10% Not important
MATK 120 + 5% 268 + 20% Obviously good to have
Neutral Element DMG 10% 0% Psychic is a neutral element so it's good
Every Element DMG 30% 15% Affects ALL magic so it's good
Psychic Wave DMG 30% 0% Our main skill so 30% is a nice boost
HP 0 3,600 + 10% Helps with surviving
SP 0 220 + 5% Not really important. Sorcerers are almost never lack of SP
Flee 20 0 20 is like... a dust
Needed Unknown Parts 80 @(enchants) This is the main problem + money sink if no luck
Needed Cor Cores 60 200 + @(enchants)
Needed Zeny 0 15M+@(if you buy unknown parts, etc) Illusion refinement cube is really expensive

Overall Grace Set is a good choice if you look for a budget option. Lvl requirement is 20lvls higher than illusion set - but it's not so difficult to survive with Eden gears.

For those who'd like to cast faster(or maybe even spam)
VCT Cost Notes
Starting Gear W/O shadows 50% Varies with lvl, max 50% - you need 50% more for 100% reduction : Not easy for newbies
Mid #1 Grace Set W/O shadows 70%
Mid #2 Illusion Set(w/ enchants) W/O shadows 67%
Paradise Shadow Set 15% Weird but yes, this set provides more VCT than the Advanced one.
Advanced Paradise Shadow Set 10% Shadow Shield is the only one that provides VCT
Cor Core Booster 8% ~2M One with a slot is more expensive and have lower VCT so buy this one W/O a slot
Violet Halo + Magical booster combo 30% +@ About 2M total Very useful combo but will have to replace a garment for this so make sure it's really worth it
Archmage's Courtesy 15% Check OS / OS-LT Headgears. If you have armor refine tickets(Armor Weapon Tickets) then this will be VERY helpful. Need at least +7
Sorcerer Stone (Mid) 10% 10M? It's EXPENSIVE so not suitable for newbies. Just wanted to show that there are options like these(costume enchants) too

Examples of combinations

- Grace Set(70% VCT) + Paradise Set(15%) + Archmage's Courtesy(15%) = 100% VCT = you are left with 0.1s FCT so take care of it = insta-cast

- Illusion Set(67%) + Paradise Set(15%) + Cor Core Booster(8%) + Archmage's Courtesy(15%) = 105% VCT and 0s FCT so insta-cast is ready

  • There are also items like Temporal DEX boots that reduces FCT so you can always combine different gears to get the result you want - The sets of gears above are just for convenience. Read Temporal Boots OGH for Temporal boots. Buying Temporal Crystals and crafting one yourself will be much cheaper since we don't need(and can't afford) any enchants yet.
  • Card is always an option too if you can afford them -
  • Like stated above, costume Enchants are an option too. I know all these information are probably too much for newbies but MuhRo gives you 10 free Fashion Points for being active(meaning not AFK) for 30minutes. You can use them to gacha Costume Enchant stones = like Sorcerer Stone (Top) or Wanderer Minstrel Stone (Garment) + Clown Gypsy stone (Low) combo that gives you 0.5 FCT reduction. This means if you manage to make this item you can use Grace Set and acheive insta-cast. As a newbie you will have to study items a LOT : you have to flexibly combine gears/cards/enchants that you have or can buy atm to acheive insta-cast AND high DMG. Later at higher lvl you may choose to NOT insta cast for highest dmg output but that's something you can ignore for a long time.

Farming Suggestions

Lvl Range Name of Map What to Farm Estimated Income

Tips

  1. Repeating Eden quests are HIGHLY recommended for newbies. Inside Eden group there's a vending machine that sells powerful buff items and even self revival items for eden coins. Personally I buy small life potions + almighty + Brilliant Protection scrolls + token of siegfried + world tour ticket often.
  2. Participating in events is HIGHLY recommended. Muh Coins are really valuable in the beginning, selling for more than 50~60k each. You could sell for some potions and etc or convert to cash for items like infinite fly wings.
  3. Use the Novice Battle Manual, preferably after rebirth! only usable for characters level 40 and below so if you don't use it it's useless. If you can level fast enough you 'could' use it before rebirth but the duration's only 30 minutes so unless you are used to this server I would just save it until you rebirth.
  4. Every illusion dungeons drop Refinement Boxes with the corresponding name on it(ex. Moonlight Refinement Box (100391)). These boxes are used to refine +4 items to +7~10 without any risks to break them; and with highly refined items you can make safe certificates to make some money for early gears. Read Armor Weapon Tickets.
  5. Starting from Sorcerer and on you can(and should) utilize ELEMENTALS for buffs, etc. Read Elemental Master for the descriptions on each types. You will have to kind of memorize(or get accustomed to) some of them since you can't find this information in game. Alt+Tabbing is an option too. Some useful ones are : Lvl 2 of each elements = 'endows corresponding element to Psychic Wave'. Normally the skill's NEUTRAL element but by summoning an elemental, you can make the skill whatever element you wish it to be. Lvl 2 of each elements, DEFENSIVE mode = boosts resistence to an element. EXTREMELY helpful when fighting 1 vs 1 like instance bosses.
  6. From Sorcerer and on you may wonder how to get enough catalysts(to summon elementals) to fulfill your needs. Usually Great Nature is not a problem because Sleeper's drop rate is amazing and you get a lot of them if you run OGH(old glast heim) instances as well; hence the price is really cheap. Mystic Frozen(Illusion of Frozen & Underwater) / Flame Heart(Farm Gigs @magma 2F) / Rough Wind (Amicitia) are however not so cheap and mystic frozen and Rough Wind are more difficult to farm for newbies. Therefore until you are high lvl enough, just buy them from people and farm zeny elsewhere instead.
  7. If I remember correct you get some Muh Coins for free when you make the first character. You could convert them into cash points to buy an infinite fly wing at the main office which will make things more comfortable until it expires. You can also get muh coins by participating events + and hunting strong monsters. Check : Muh Coins

End

Lastly, reading wiki is EXTREMELY helpful even if you are used to RO from playing another server. I still read it at work lol
