Zeny

Zeny is the currency in Ragnarok Online. When items are marked with "Z," it typically refers to Zeny, as in "Selling Item X, 100,000 Z!"

Zeny Limitations

A single character can only hold up to (2^31 - 1) = 2,147,483,647 Zeny at any given time. If, during a trade, one player attempts to add enough Zeny to push the other player’s total above this limit, the trade will automatically fail. Additionally, a single trade is capped at 999,999,999 Zeny at one time.

When selling an item via the Vending skill, if the sale would cause the seller to exceed the 2.1-billion Zeny cap, the transaction will not process, and the item cannot be purchased. Previously, this resulted in the buyer losing their Zeny, receiving the item, while the seller received no Zeny at all.

Most players limit themselves to either 2.0 or 2.1 billion Zeny per character at any given time to ensure smooth transactions.

Earning Zeny

Since Zeny is the primary currency in the game, a player's wealth and their ability to purchase gear or items depends on how much Zeny they have. Zeny is primarily earned by selling items to NPCs, but selling to veteran players with large amounts of Zeny is typically the main way to accumulate significant wealth. The basics include selling items to NPCs and Vending. Some valuable items can be hunted or obtained through Quests.
