Lets start to built up your newly created character. When you created you new character you start at the beginners quest. DO THAT QUEST - while doing that quest, you change your job already to merchant. You will get the {{#item:20307}} - use that because it gives you a good amount of bonus until level 100. At the Eden Group you will get starting gear. You can get your first weapon and armor set from Lothaire in Eden(I mostly take the {{#item:590025}}).
