This page is heavily work in progress! If you have additional Informations, feel free to add it or inform the Team about it.
Requirements
Wine
webkit2gtk4.0
Pre-Requisite Installations
Wine
Fedora/RHEL: sudo dnf install wine
Arch Linux: sudo pacman -S wine
Debian/Ubuntu/Pop_OS/Mint: sudo apt install wine
If your distribution has a outdated Wine version Download Wine by going to this link and follow the instructions for your specific Linux distribution to install.
Webkit2gtk4.0
Some distributions do not include this dependency and must install it manually. The patcher will not launch if this dependency is not installed.
Fedora/RHEL: sudo dnf install webkit2gtk3-devel
Arch Linux : sudo pacman -S webkit2gtk webkit2gtk-4.1
Installing MuhRO
If you haven't already, create a master account and confirm your email address.
Once you have a master account, and verified through discord, you can download MuhRO by entering /download (typed, not pasted) in any discord channel.
Download the Full Client using the mirror of your choice.
Extract the zip file to the location you would like to store the game on your computer.
Navigate to the folder you extracted and double click on Muh_Patcher.
You may have to go to files properties and mark it as executable in the permissions tab before it will launch.
The first time that you launch it you will need to click Game Setup on the left hand menu.
Configure your settings in the Game Setup menu. Click Apply, then click OK.
Enter your Master Account Login and select your character account to begin playing.
Creating an Application Desktop/Menu Entry
Create a new text file named MuhRO.desktop in ~/.local/share/applications.
Enter the following into the text file and save it. Make sure to replace PATH TO FOLDER CONTAINING GAME FILES with the path to the folder containing your game files (ideally a location without spaces in the folder).
[Desktop Entry]
Comment=MuhRO
Exec=env WINEDEBUG=-all /PATH/TO/FOLDER/CONTAINING/GAME-FILES/Muh_Patcher
Icon=/PATH/TO/FOLDER/CONTAINING/GAME-FILES/muhro.ico
Name=MuhRO
Path=/PATH/TO/FOLDER/CONTAINING/GAME-FILES/
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Make the file executable by either opening the files properties and marking it as executable in the permissions tab or run the following in terminal.
chmod +x ~/.local/share/applications/MuhRO.desktop
You may have to log out and back in to see the start menu entry.
Known Problems
Bad performance
Using dxvk can often give significant performance benefits. To use it, follow these steps:
- Start the patcher
- On the left side, click on "Addons"
- Find "Renderer" and set it to "dxvk"
- Done! You can now launch the game
Performance on hybrid graphics
When running hybrid graphics (e.g. onboard graphics + dedicated nvidia GPU), the following environment variables may help when launching the game:
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia ./Muh_Patcher
Running on NixOS
Running the patcher in NixOS requires some additional tinkering in order for the binary to find its needed libraries, and for webkit to obtain networking.
Add/adjust the following sections in your /etc/nixos/configuration.nix:
# provides networking to the webview of the patcher
environment.sessionVariables.GIO_EXTRA_MODULES = lib.mkForce [
"${pkgs.glib-networking}/lib/gio/modules"
"${pkgs.dconf.lib}/lib/gio/modules"
];
# provides shared libraries expected by the patcher-binary
programs.nix-ld = {
enable = true;
libraries = with pkgs; [
webkitgtk_4_1
gtk3
cairo
gdk-pixbuf
libsoup_3
glib
glib-networking
0penssl # replace 0 with letter o (blocked by muhro-wiki's cloudflare protection)
gcc
glibc
];
}
environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [
# ... other packages
wineWow64Packages.stable # had issues detecting my gpu with just "wine"
kdePackages.kdialog
];
Additional notes:
- Above example had success using KDE Plasma and niri (niri requires the
xwayland-satellite-package though), but the patcher only ran successfully usingGDK_BACKEND=x11 ./Muh_Patcher - Switching from
winetowineWow64Packages.stablerequired me to wipe my wineprefix before it took effect - DXVK option in the patcher addons doesn't seem to work for me on nix, but running
winetricks dxvkdid work, and brings dramatic(!) performance improvements. You can double-check whether or not dxvk works by running the Patcher withDXVK_HUD=full ./Muh_Patcher
Huge thanks to c69manifold, who found the list of required NixOS-packages that make the libraries required for the patcher available (original discord-post)
Patcher only shows a black/gray screen
This is a wayland issue that may surface in some installations. It may be solved by running the patcher with this additional environment-variable: GDK_BACKEND=x11 ./Muh_Patcher
Unacceptable TLS certificate
This issue seems to affect Ubuntu 22.04 and all other distro based on it (KDE Neon)
Solution: so far changing distro
(!Not recommended anymore!) Using Proton
Note: Since client update from 13th August 2026, proton is not necessary anymore to run the client (and might get in the way of using the MuhUI feature of this server).
Regular wine versions (including up-to-date ones) should work just fine.
You can use Proton setting the patcher with an environment variable
Create a file named proton-wrapper.sh inside muhro folder with this content:
#!/bin/bash PROTON_DIR="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton 10.0" APPID="muhro" STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/$APPID" STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="$HOME/.steam/steam" mkdir -p $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/$APPID export PROTON_DIR export APPID export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH export STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH export SteamAppId="$APPID" "$PROTON_DIR/proton" run "$@"
Open a terminal in muhro folder:
Make the file executable with chmod +x proton-wrapper.sh
Execute the patcher with env RPATCHUR_WINE=/path/to/gamefolder/proton-wrapper.sh ./Muh_Patcher
If you have created a menu-entry (How To Play on Linux#Creating an Application Desktop/Menu Entry), the following entry
Exec=PATH TO FOLDER CONTAINING GAME FILES/Muh_Patcher
should be replaced with
Exec=env RPATCHUR_WINE=/path/to/gamefolder/proton-wrapper.sh path/to/gamefolder/Muh_Patcher
Removing proton-usage
Remove the RPATCHUR_WINE environment variable from your desktop-file, or don't use it anymore when manually launching the patcher.
Optionally, the proton-wrapper.sh may be deleted, but in any case it will not be invoked anymore if the environment variable is removed or renamed.
