Work in progress! by Hannie
Introduction
This guide's aim is to help provide a baseline knowledge about this popular yet almost forgotten class in PVE. Hope it will prove useful to anyone who's reading this.
Night Watch is a pretty straightforward DPS class that is very easy to pick up as you go, but to truly master the usage of its arsenal ( yes, there is 5 types of guns with at least 1 builds for each ) will take a long time.
Why should you play one, and what does it offer?
OG | Short |
---|---|
Night Watch | NW |
Damage per second | DPS |
Grenade Launcher | GL |
Area of Effect | DPS |
Action Point | AP |
- Pros
- You get to use a gun! yes, not for fun but guns have 0 size penalty, so you don't have to worry about that part for the rest of your life
- Wide variety of builds, and weapons selection
- Have innate DEF ignore on some builds, and CRIT skill on some.
- Medium mobility with Fallen Angel
- No cooldown 25% max HP worth of shield
- On DPS build can be pretty competitive single DPS on boss.
- Free 30 Crit from intensive aim
- Cons
- Gear swapping will be essential to learn and master.
- Mediocre AOE farming, Good single target and instance farming. Not the class you will want as your main farmer
- Very dependance on gear
- Low base HP due to Extended class can't rebirth.
- Mobility tied to Pistol gun type.
- Cost zeny to get coins, and most of your skills require coins and other types of ammo.
- Worse ammo viability than other ammo users. Only have access to Fire, Earth, Water, Wind, Holy, Neutral, Shadow and Poison.
- 4th job's Aim mechanic requires you to stand still in one place, only way to move is Fallen Angel
On my scale, i'd rate Night Watch to be 6/10 in term of difficulties.
Gun types
Revolver
Only gun type that can use the only movement skill : Fallen Angel, which we will get to more details on the skill section.
Suitable for boss DPS due to high scaling on Magazine for One skill. Lacks any noticeable AOE skill beside Fire Dance which requires you to be melee and does not scale on 4th job stats.
Rifle
All of rifle skills are critical based. So rifle are locked into critical damage build and have no access to DEF ignore skills.
Rifle is a well rounded gun, has access to boss DPS by spamming Only One Bullet and Spiral Shot. and Spiral shot is an AOE skill in itself albeit very small ( 7x7 around target ).
Shotgun
Similar to Revolver, Shotgun boast one of the biggest damage scaling skill. But it slow base ASPD and lacks of neither crit/DEF ignore put it behind other guns. Usable but not strong.
Shotgun has access to both target ground AOE and center around caster AOE ( both 7x7 ) which makes it not bad to pick up as a farmer build.
Gatling
The king of farming, singlehandedly carry Rebellion with Round Trip and now on Night Watch proceed to do it again with Vigilante In The Night. The difference ? They can now do long range single target with Magazine For One.
Has always been and will still be the best gun to start with, VITN is spamable Round trip and even ignores DEF. both Magazine For One and Vigilante In The Night deals acceptable boss DPS too.
Grenade Launcher
Has always been the weird one, but never the weak link. GL have lowest base ASPD out of the bunch. but makes up with huge damage multiplier. On Rebellion, GL has a cooldown limit but on Night Watch, Grenade Launcher become a spammer build which deals high enough damage to be competitive at end game. and all of Grenade Launcher skills hits for big AOE skill, which makes it an very good choice for farming.

This is objectively from my experience. And are wildly varied depends on gear, familiarity with the game, your willingness to use consumables, ...
Skills
Some noticeable skill from each of the skill tree will be explained here. Since the skill points will varied build to build, I won't be listing skill builds here yet
General Skills
Gunslinger
Snake Eyes - Stat passive
Single Action - Stat passive
Chain Action - Stat passive, can skip maxing out but very useful when dealing with plant-type combat
Coin Flip - The base skill to gain coins on Gunslinger, will be replaced later on but is a prequisite, each use cost 1 zeny
Increase Accuracy - A very small stat self buff that last for 1 min
Gatling Fever - A self buff if you are using gatling
Rebellion
Rich's Coin - Your most important skill to generate coins, instantly gives max coin with 100 zeny cost
Binding Trap (Dark Pit) - A good skill to use when soloing, although not as potent as ankle snare but it helps alot even with just the slow. A little clunky to use, have to aim far from your self
Banishing Buster (Exile) - Shotgun skill that removes 1 positive buff from a target, useful in some situation but generally not worth the hassle. Will fail if you dont have enough HIT, has elemental immunity, auto guard
Eternal Chain (Infinite Chain) - Allows Chain Action skill to benefits all guns, therefore opens up Quick Draw Shot for all guns
Quick Draw Shot (Tailwind Shot) - After Chain Action passive proc, use this skill to add damage to that shot. Does not have acd and can be cast as much as your ASPD and luck for chain action procs
Crimson Marker (Blood Brand) - Reduce target FLEE to 10, and damage to Rebellion's skills towards marked target. Bread and butter for bossing as a Rebellion
Fallen Angel (Nephilim) - Your only movement skill, can spam as much as you have the coins for it. Only usable on Revolver
Platinum Alter - 25% max HP shield, Mastery ATK increases depends on the amount of coins you have on cast. Very potent buff without cooldown that you will use alot, downside is the skill only works with Silver Bullet (13221) or Purifying Bullet (13220)
Heat Barrel (Acceleration Bullet) - 50% FCT, ASPD and Attack buff depends on the amount of coins you have on cast. Can be used with all bullets but have cooldown.
Anti-Material Blast (Obliterator) - Rifle skill that have a chance to put resistance reduction debuff on the target. It will boost your team DPS by a lot, but the debuff duration is short and have a chance to fail. Useful on all guns in bossfights.
Night Watch
P.F.I - Stat passive
Grenade Mastery - Stat passive
Grenade Fragment - Changes the element of your grenade skill tree ( the one below Grenade mastery, not grenade launcher's skill
Auto Firing Launcher - Gives NW auto attack a chance to use the 3 grenade skills, usually NW will not be using auto attack but once there is gear for auto grenade build it will find its use. for now dont worry about this.
Hidden Card - NW's "unlimit", gives you a huge damage boost for the duration. Cost 150 AP
Intensive Aim - Enter aim mode. While in aim mode, NW cannot move by any means aside from Fallen Angel (Nephilim), but in term will gain stack of Aiming that will boost NW other skills and stat boost
Mission Bombard - NW "dps" ultimate, deals a burst of damage. Not worth using since you will be keeping AP to reuse Hidden Card.
DPS Skill
Gun skill
One or Two of these will be your main tool, they are limits to having equip two certain guns, and builds will be center around these.
Skill | Overall | Special 1 | Special 2 |
---|---|---|---|
The Vigilante at Night | AOE skill centered around player | Gatling: Ignores DEF, Bigger AOE | Shotgun: Higher Scaling, Smaller AOE |
Only One Bullet | Single target skill | Revolver: ignores DEF, higher scaling | Rifle: can crit |
Spiral Shooting | AOE skill that does damage around target | Rifle: can crit | Grenade Launcher: deals 2 hit, bigger AOE |
Magazine for One | Single target skill | Revolver: can crit, higher scaling | Gatling: deals more hits |
Wild Fire | AOE skill that does damage in the selected area ( ground target ) | Grenade Launcher: bigger AOE | Shotgun: higher Scaling, smaller AOE |
Gun skill
These skills have pretty similar function is that they do some small aoe damage, generates AP and can choose element with Grenade Fragment. Either one or two of these is very good to have when farming. They cost Throwing Grenade (1000564)

Hasty Fire in the Hole
